What You Can Do

• Use Lakewood’s Zero Waste Directory to find to easy ways to reduce, recycle and properly dispose of different types of waste.
• Participate in Lakewood’s Food Scrap Drop-off Program.
• Schedule a free home pickup of qualifying reusable building materials with Resource Central.
  • Also buy reusable building materials from Resource Central!
• Drop-off woody debris with the Jefferson County Sustainable Lands and Safer Homes (SLASH) program instead of throwing it in the trash.
  • Use a City of Lakewood voucher for a SLASH drop-off.
• Plant and maintain trees in your yard.
• Take the Pollinator Safe Pledge.
• Establish a Backyard Habitat for Wildlife.
• Track neighborhood biodiversity with iNaturalist.

What the Neighborhood is Doing

• Organizes a fruit gleaning event each fall and makes applesauce.
• Hosts an annual leaf composting drop-off/pick-up event.
• Collects non-working holiday light strings for recycling each year.
• Hosts an annual Christmas tree composting drop-off/pick-up event.
• Teaches neighbors how to compost in their backyard.

What the City is Doing

One of the Guiding Principles in Lakewood’s Comprehensive Plan (Envision Lakewood 2040) is Sustainability and Climate Action.

Lakewood’s 2040 Targets to support this Guiding Principle include:

• Minimize waste generation and achieve 90% waste diversion to advance a circular economy and zero waste culture.
• Increase tree canopy coverage, improve water quality, enhance biodiversity and utilize nature and nature-based solutions to strengthen and restore natural ecosystems.
